Stolen firearms and tools from an overnight burglary in Santa Cruz County were recovered early Friday morning by San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies after a stop on Sand Hill Road from northbound Interstate 280, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

At about 2:15 a.m., deputies from the Sheriff’s Office stopped a suspicious vehicle and observed gloves, flashlights, face masks and other items commonly used in burglaries. The unlicensed driver, Jose E. Matute Vaquedano, 25, was on probation for robbery and prohibited from possessing firearms and the passenger, Mauricio Peralta Marin, 27, was found to be in possession of an illegal explosive device, according to the Sheriff’s Office. During the course of the investigation, deputies located two stolen rifles in the vehicle and determined they were registered to a Santa Cruz County resident. Deputies also recovered several stolen tools and burglary tools in the vehicle.
