A switching problem with San Jose International Airport's backup generator system was the cause of a 40-minute blackout last night that delayed about 1,500 travelers, an airport spokesman said today.
The power outage, which began at approximately 6:40 p.m. yesterday, affected seven gates and the ticket counter at the airport's Terminal A. Sixteen American and Southwest Airlines flights were delayed by approximately one hour, according to airport spokesman Steve Luckenbach.
The airport has a backup generator system in case of power outages, but for an unknown reason the system's automatic switch did not activate last night.
"The automatic switch did not go on but when we switched it on manually it did," Luckenbach said.
Airport crews are examining the automatic switch today to determine the problem.
The power outage affected more than 5,200 customers in addition to the airport, including San Jose's Valley Fair mall.<
