One of the longest-standing civic leaders in San Mateo County, San Carlos Mayor Sally Mitchell, stepped down from public service Monday night after serving 16 years and four terms as mayor.
Mitchell was born and raised in San Carlos and attended Brittan Acres Elementary, Central Middle School and San Carlos High School.
She began her career in San Carlos as a fire inspector for the city, later working in the same capacity for the San Mateo Fire Department. At the same time, she attended law school at night, graduated and passed the Bar in 1980, according to San Carlos Assistant City Manager Brian Moura.
Mitchell was originally elected to the city council in 1985, and is currently serving as mayor. She practices law in San Mateo, specializing in sexual harassment and discrimination litigation.
Moura said Mitchell's achievements in office include founding the mayor's holiday food drive, playing a key role in the creation of the San Carlos Youth Center, developing a transitional housing project for single mothers completing their education and seeking employment, and actively promoting passage of city ordinances requiring fire-proof roofing materials and protecting heritage trees.
