A shoplifter at the Redwood City Target was sentenced to four years in prison with credit for 697 days served for threatening a loss prevention officer with pepper spray after loading up his cart with $820.70 worth of merchandise while on probation for another crime during which he was shot just months prior in 2023.
Jonathan Mackey, 28, of San Carlos, was on probation for stealing from Home Depot Monday, Aug. 7, in San Carlos after serving a six-month sentence in jail with 161 days credit, when he stole from the Target Dec. 7, 2023.
In the prior case, he stole tools by stuffing them in his jacket and walking out of the store. The store’s security guard stopped Mackey and he allegedly dropped the tools to the ground. When the officer tried to get Mackey back inside the building, Mackey allegedly punched the security guard in the face.
During the altercation, Mackey allegedly gained control of the security guard’s collapsible baton and struck him in the face and head before he threw the baton through a glass window near the store’s entrance. The security guard shot twice at Mackey, striking him once in the buttock, according to the DA’s Office.
The incident at Target months later occurred after a loss prevention officer tried to stop him from leaving with the shopping cart full of goods. While he never pepper sprayed anyone, the cart tipped over and hit a bystander in his shin and he grabbed a Segway worth $274.68 and ran. He dropped his cellphone, which later identified him, and he was arrested when he reported to his probation officer, according to the DA’s Office.
He was ordered to pay restitution of $274.68. He was also sentenced to two years prison for violating his probation, but that will run concurrent to his other sentence, according to the DA’s Office.
