Months of searching came to an end last night when the San Carlos City Council named Mark Weiss as its new city manager, heralding the beginning of a new era at City Hall.
Weiss will fill the seat of retiring City Manager Mike Garvey who held the position for the last 18 years. He will be the third San Carlos city manager in the last 40 years.
"The person coming in needs to not fill [Mike Garvey's] shoes, but make his own mark," said Mayor Inge Tiegel Doherty.
Weiss will leave his current position as the assistant city manager in La Quinta, Calif., and start with San Carlos Sept. 26. In the meantime, Assistant City Manager Brian Moura will lead city staff.
Weiss has a strong background in economic development and boasts a resume of extensive city government experience. He previously worked for Half Moon Bay for 10 years, including seven years as city manager from 1986 to 1996. He also held positions with Oklahoma City, the state of South Dakota and the University of Oklahoma.

He has a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from the University of South Dakota.
Wiess' appointment comes after a national search conducted by an executive search firm specializing in local government recruiting. More than 30 people applied for the position and his strength in economic development placed him above the rest, Doherty said.
Weiss will relocate later this summer and was not present for the announcement Wednesday evening.
"San Carlos has a solid heritage associated with the quality of life, stability and family values. Those qualities lend themselves nicely to provide an environment within which to work and accomplish the city's objectives," Weiss said in a prepared statement.
