San Mateo County sheriff’s officials are investigating a mail scam after a Half Moon Bay resident reported on Monday that they’d been scammed out of more than $4,000 by someone impersonating PG&E, sheriff’s officials said.
After receiving a report of fraud, deputies responded to the first block of Stone Pine Road, according to sheriff’s officials.
The victim told deputies they had received a letter in the mail, advising them that their PG&E bill was past due. The letter demanded that the victim pay $4,400 by sending a prepaid card with the money loaded onto it.
The victim sent the money as requested, but later learned they had been scammed, sheriff’s officials said.
Deputies are seeking suspects in connection with the alleged fraud. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (650) 599-1664.
