Know a little bit ‘bout history? Want to know a bit more and share with others? Now is your chance. The San Mateo County Historical Association will conduct its annual docent training Oct. 11 and Oct. 18 for its three sites: the San Mateo County History Museum, the Sanchez Adobe historic house in Pacifica and the Woodside Store in Woodside.
The program is free. Once volunteers are trained to be docents, they have a choice of conducting scheduled tours for children and/or adults or interpreting local history for general visitors to the sites. Speakers will include association staff, experienced docents and Dr. Mark Still, Ph.D. of the College of San Mateo. Topics of the training will include the Ohlone Indians, Spanish outposts on the Peninsula, Mexican ranchos, early American pioneers, San Mateo County immigration history, local entrepreneurs, suburbanization and instruction on how to communicate with the public. Tours of all three sites will be part of the orientation.
Last school year, 20,000 students and their adult chaperons visited the association’s sites. Those interested can call (650) 299-0104, Ex 233 or go to education@historysmc.org.
