Two dozen students from the San Mateo Union High School District visited the offices of Forbes ASAP in Burlingame on Wednesday for workshops on journalism, cutting-edge technology, Web searching and venture capital.
Michael S. Malone, editor of Forbes ASAP, gave the students an irreverent history of Silicon Valley, covering technological developments from the advent of the vacuum tube to the microprocessor in just 35 minutes.
Eric Pfeiffer, features editor of Forbes ASAP, brought them up to date on new developments in fiber optics and tiny machines called microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
Forbes ASAP is Forbes magazine's high tech supplement.
Other Forbes ASAP editors hosted seminars on how to market a book proposal; the skills that all editors and writers need to know; fast Web searching techniques; and on-the-spot reporting.
Venture capitalist Daniel Rubin of Alloy Ventures in Palo Alto joined one session to explain what entrepreneurs need to know to obtain funding. Marcella Bernhard of Forbes.com gave tips on writing for the Web.
