Access to Canvas, a key online learning system used by many higher education institutions, was restored for students in the San Mateo County Community College District Friday afternoon.
Students and employees now have access to the educational server, but some features may be restricted still, with full function expected by the end of the day, a district alert announced.
Canvas experienced a nationwide outage on Thursday, affecting online courses at College of San Mateo, Skyline College in San Bruno and Cañada College in Redwood City.
A ransom message appeared within Canvas demanding that its developer, Instructure, contact the attacker or risk the release of data by May 12. It was not directed at any particular college or university, but rather the developer itself.
“The attacker did not gain access to core Canvas functionality, and there were no changes to user data, grades, or assignment information,” the Friday afternoon update said.
However, some user data was exfiltrated and “may be misused over time.” Users are advised to remain cautious, the district said. Anyone who attempted to sign into Canvas during the outage was recommended to reset their password.
Students and faculty should be on alert for phishing attempts and suspicious messages from unfamiliar users soliciting money or asking you to click links.
