A huge festive German celebration will sprawl over Courthouse Square beginning this weekend, inviting residents to drink beer and eat bratwurst for Redwood City’s return of Oktoberfest.
The city center will become reminiscent of a small German town, celebrating the traditional festival with family-style bench seating, vibrant dance performances and commemorative stein glasses.
“It’s always one of the best times of the year and we see so many people come out to enjoy such a fun event,” Brandon Council, special events coordinator for the city’s Parks and Recreation department, said.
The popularity of the festival has only grown over the years and as demand continues, the city will be hosting a total of 12 seatings over nine days in hopes of allowing all those who are interested to come out and celebrate.
The center of the celebration is completely transformed under festive canopies so guests can enjoy their food and drinks while performers dance to toe-tapping sets by German bands. Pretzels, brats and other Bavarian bites, paired nicely with pints or root beer, will be available for purchase.
Each evening seating will include dance contests, stein-holding challenges and yodeling competitions.
Entertainment featured at Oktoberfest includes the Golden Gate Bavarian Club, a group that will perform Austrian folk dances, The Internationals Band performing Europeans dance favorites, and the Alpine Sound Band who will perform Austrian and German music. A large band, Deutscher Musikverein, will also perform folk and concert pieces.
Seeing familiar faces and new community members is part of what makes Oktoberfest so enjoyable, Council said.
“Our focus every year is to really refine the things we’re good at and find ways to enhance every year to have something fun and unique,” Council said.
Ticket prices range from $10 to $25 for all ages who are not drinking, and $16 to $35 for those who are 21 years or older and imbibing. Tickets include a commemorative stein and a drink voucher.
Council recommended those interested to buy tickets as soon as possible to make sure they get a chance to be a part of the festivities.
The first evening seating will be held from 5-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. From Sept. 19 to 28, except for Sept. 22, there will be an evening seating beginning at either 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. On the weekends, an afternoon seating will also be hosted. On each Saturday, the afternoon seating will begin at noon, and on Sunday at 11 a.m.
