See's Candies on Third Ave. may be out of business for the rest of the holiday season because an 82-year old woman crashed into the front display window yesterday.
The woman reportedly lost control of her brand new Lincoln.
According to the San Mateo Police Department, the woman was backing out of a parking spot in front of the store at 9:30 a.m., and then moved forward because of an oncoming car -- but she pushed the accelerator too hard and jumped the curb, landing in the window of the candy store at 128 E. Third Ave.
The car will need some repairs but no one was injured.
The storefront, on the hand, is a wreck.
Maintenance workers assessed the damage and began making repairs that morning. See's Candies officials did not have an estimate of the damage. They not only lost the candy in the display window, but will also have to pay for repairs. The real heavy cost, however, will be in lost sales. The Christmas season is one of the busiest times of the year for See's.
"The store's going to be closed through Christmas. It's not going to re-open very soon," said Tim Kircher, construction manager for See's Candies. "This is a popular store, so we're just hoping [customers] will go to other shops."
Kircher said that they will be working to get the store open again as soon as possible.
