Sheriff’s deputies and first responders answered what turned out to be a false alarm Monday night when a woman reported her husband missing while paddleboarding in Half Moon Bay.
According to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, a caller told deputies that she and her husband had gone paddleboarding at sunset near Pillar Point Harbor but had become separated and she lost sight of him.
Deputies enlisted the assistance of the Coastside Fire Protection District, the San Mateo County Harbor District and the U.S. Coast Guard in an attempt to locate the missing paddleboarder in the nighttime waters of the Pacific Ocean.
A short time later, deputies located the man on land, walking back to his car.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office advises people to avoid going in the water at night because conditions can be dangerous, visibility is poor and it can be easy to become separated from others.
