A 36-year-old Burlingame woman was arrested for allegedly stabbing to death a man with whom she lived Saturday night, according to police.
Mia Smith is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon after she was arrested on homicide charges and being held in San Mateo County Jail without bail. The victim was Burlingame resident 53-year-old Edward Allison, according to the Coroner’s Office.
Police were called to the home on the 100 block of Myrtle Road just to the east of the railroad tracks in the Lyon Hoag neighborhood around 9:40 p.m. July 22 on a report of a man who was unresponsive. When they arrived, they found him suffering from life-threatening stab wounds. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Burlingame police Lt. Jay Kiely confirmed both the victim and Smith lived at the home and were known to each other.
Further information about Smith wasn’t readily available. However, it appears in a 2015 post on the website Meetup.com Smith listed she worked as a senior relationship banker at the downtown Burlingame Union Bank. A bank representative did not immediately return a request for comment.
It is believed Smith was the one who initially summoned police to the home where she lived, Kiely said. It’s not exactly clear what her motive was, however, the investigation is ongoing, he said, adding anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.
“We’re still investigating all possible scenarios and motives. That being said, if the public has information they think would be helpful, we urge them to contact us,” Kiely said.

The last time Burlingame investigated a homicide was during a July 2015 stabbing when Rodney O’Neil Williams killed 28-year-old Neil Lewis during a fight outside an office complex. The two men were co-workers for an airport rental car company when they got into a dispute about a woman. Williams fled but was found weeks later in Sacramento. A jury convicted him in March 2016 and he’s now serving a 31-year prison sentence.
Kiely recalled the Williams case and noted Burlingame doesn’t often experience homicides. Kiely said police are hard at work as they try to uncover what led Smith to allegedly stab to death a man inside their home Saturday evening.
“Given that this is a homicide, we take this matter and the investigation completely seriously,” Kiely said. “Given the gravity of the circumstances, it’s very serious and we have our entire investigative bureau dedicated to investigating the matter.”
