More than 25 years after a Redwood City woman was sexually assaulted several times in her apartment, one of the two men who raped her pleaded no contest to seven felony charges Thursday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Extradited from Mexico in October to face rape, sodomy and forcible oral copulation charges in concert with another man, Jose Carrera Perez, 53, is expected to be sentenced to 40 years to life in prison when he next appears in court Sept. 21, according to prosecutors.
On Sept. 29, 1992, Perez and Jose Luis Zamperio are said to have entered the victim’s Redwood City apartment while she was asleep. The woman was pinned down and had her mouth covered with a cloth while she was sexually assaulted several times by both men, according to prosecutors.
Neighbors who heard her screams called police, who interrupted the attack when they knocked on the door and caused Perez to escape through a window. Zamperio was found hiding under the victim’s bed. An arrest warrant was issued for Perez, whose vehicle was found nearby, according to prosecutors.
Zamperio pleaded no contest to seven felony sexual assault charges in 1993 and was sentenced to 35 years in state prison, according to prosecutors.
Karen Guidotti, chief deputy district attorney for San Mateo County, expressed relief at the news of Perez’s plea deal, which she hoped would bring closure to the victim.
“I am so pleased that after all these years that the victim is finally able to see justice done in this case,” she said. “She waited a long time for this.”
Perez’s defense attorney Jeff Jackson could not be immediately reached for comment.
