Man behind bars for stabbing security guard in Redwood City

Behind bars on $10 million bail, Anthony Webb pleaded not guilty to his charges of attempted murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon and infliction of great bodily injury when he appeared in court Monday, so the county’s private defender program was appointed to his case, according to prosecutors.

Webb is said to have purchased a few items from the Grocery Outlet at 1833 Broadway in Redwood City and approached the security guard, who was wearing plain clothes and standing near the door, on his way out of the store. As he passed by the security guard, Webb allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the man in the chest, according to prosecutors.

As police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene, Webb allegedly stayed in the store until his arrest. The security guard was allegedly rushed to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to recover, according to prosecutors.

Surveillance footage of the stabbing was obtained, and a store employee allegedly overheard Webb talking to himself prior to the incident and complaining about the security officer looking at him, allegedly saying to himself he was going to get him, according to prosecutors.

District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Webb faces a potential life prison term because prosecutors are alleging the stabbing was premeditated. He will next appear in court Jan. 17 for preliminary hearing, according to prosecutors.
