A pair of storms rolling through the Bay Area is expected to bring a moderate amount of rain this weekend, but starting Sunday, beaches will be hit by massive waves, prompting the weather service to issue a high surf warning from Sonoma County to Monterey County.
The warning will be in effect from Sunday morning through Monday evening, and waves are expected to range from 25 to 50 feet in height. The waves are generated by a “strong system” south of the Aleutian Islands near Alaska that’s moving toward the West Coast.
“This is the largest high wave event we’ve had this season and last season,” said meteorologist Anna Schneider, adding that there will be an increased risk of sneaker waves, rip currents and long shore currents. “There might be some brave surfers, but we recommend staying back from the water’s edge and out of the ocean.”
Conditions won’t be so dramatic away from the coast.
There will be light showers Friday through Saturday and the second, larger storm will hit Sunday. It’s expected to dump three-quarters of an inch to 1 inch of rain on the Bay side of the county through Monday. About 1 inch is expected fall further north and the mountains could see 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches of rain. That would bring the county to a total of 4 3/4 inches of rain for the season so far — about 90 percent of normal.
And temperatures will be a mild 50 to 60 degrees throughout the weekend, with some gusts, but not to concerning levels, Schneider said.
The Sierras will see about 4 to 6 inches of snow around Cayuga Pass. Higher elevations, such as Donner Pass, will take on 8 to 12 inches of snow. Lassen Park meanwhile will receive a whopping 24 to 30 inches of snow.
