Buoyed by the unexpected success of its free shuttle service to local schools, the city of San Carlos recently approved its expansion despite a solid source of funding.
The cash-strapped city is looking at options like charging for rides or placing a parcel tax on a future ballot. Currently, city officials plan to use sales tax money set aside for transportation issues. However, one councilmember said the tax funds or other grants should not be counted on before they are received.
Councilmember Matt Grocott was the sole dissenter last Monday when his fellow politicians endorsed a new agreement for the SCOOT shuttles with Standard Parking. The estimated $616,000 contract provides four 20-passenger shuttle buses which travel to Arundel Elementary and Tierra Linda Middle schools, the youth center, the Caltrain station, the senior center and the downtown area. Newly added is Central Middle School.
