A San Leandro man accused of stabbing a co-worker outside a San Carlos restaurant earlier this year appeared in San Mateo County Superior Court Monday after he was transported here from the Yuba County Jail, where he was held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Bail of $100,000 was set for Bulmaro Maldonado Sanchez, 35, who is charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury for his alleged April 29 stabbing of a co-worker, according to prosecutors.
Sanchez, a 35-year-old San Leandro resident, worked in the kitchen at Town Restaurant on Laurel Street in San Carlos when he got into a verbal argument with a co-worker. After getting off work around midnight, the dispute turned physical and the victim threw a punch. Sanchez then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim several times in the torso causing severe cuts to his lower stomach, shoulder and armpit, according to prosecutors.
Following his arrest, Sanchez posted bail but then failed to show up to a June 20 court date and a bench warrant was issued. Thereafter, Sanchez’s defense attorney contacted prosecutors to inform them his client had been picked up by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and was being held at the Yuba County Jail, which contracts with ICE to serve as a federal detention facility, prosecutors said previously.
ICE was able to identify Sanchez for possible deportation using the fingerprints he was required to submit when he was booked. Those fingerprints were put into a U.S. Department of Justice database, which ICE accesses for the purpose of determining which defendants they want to take into custody, said prosecutors previously.
On June 30, a San Mateo County Superior Court judge signed an order instructing federal immigration officials to return the man to local authorities so he can be prosecuted in San Mateo County, according to prosecutors.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe confirmed that Sanchez will be turned over to ICE after his San Mateo County court proceedings conclude, and currently remains in custody. He will next appear in court Aug. 10 for preliminary hearing, according to Wagstaffe.
