A man found guilty of raping three women in San Mateo County during the summer of 2020 has been sentenced to 90 years to life in state prison, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Alejandro Vanegas Guevara, 31, was found guilty of forcible rape, rape of an unconscious woman, forcible digital penetration and kidnapping in December 2022 by a jury, and found guilty of aggravating factors including infliction of great bodily injury by presiding Judge Stephanie Garratt.
Guevara raped a 62-year-old woman at the bus stop at Ninth Avenue and El Camino Real in San Mateo Aug. 5, and beat her unconscious before raping her a second time. He also raped another woman at the Caltrain parking garage in Redwood City and another near the main library earlier in the summer.
Garratt previously sentenced Guevara to 90 years to life in April 2023, but the case went to an appeals court, according to the DA’s Office. The appeals court affirmed the conviction but requested a resentencing based on the semantics of consecutive sentences, and Garratt reapplied the 90 years to life sentencing Sept. 30 despite defense requests for a sentence of 65 years to life.
“[We’re] grateful that Judge Garratt understood the evilness of what this man did to that woman and realized it and imposed the maximum sentence,” Wagstaffe said. “He certainly deserves it.”
