Mutts, purebreds and their people friends are invited to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA 10th Annual Mutt Strutt Dog Walk-a-thon fund-raiser on Saturday.
The event raises between $25,000 and $32,000 annually, said PHS/SPCA spokesperson Scott Delucchi. The money helps the organization's most needy animals, "those animals who need medical care and or behavior modification in order to be made available for adoption," Delucchi said.
The walk generally attracts between 300 and 400 dogs annually. This year, the agency hopes to set a new record with 500 dog participants. The canines come from all walks of life: big dogs, little dogs, dogs in purses, dogs in backpacks and even a few dogs in costume. "There aren't many places where people can see so many types of dogs," Delucchi said. Walkers without dogs are welcome too, he added. "You don't need a mutt to strutt."
Participants are encouraged to raise $100 each in pledges, in addition to the event entry fee.
The Mutt Strutt will be held on Aug. 21 at San Mateo's Coyote Point Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 11 a.m.
Pre-walk entertainment will be offered by the South City Blues Band and the radio station Star 101. The event will also feature canine contests for titles including best kisser and most talented.
CBS-5 Chief Meteorologist Samantha Mohr is this year's celebrity grand marshal, cutting the ribbon to start the walk.
