The national supermarket chain Trader Joe's has genetically engineered ingredients in one of its store-brand products, according to Greenpeace.
The environmental group commissioned laboratory tests on four store products -- corn bread mix, corn flakes, corn chips and a soy-based packaged meal -- and announced today that one item tested positive for genetically altered corn.
"Trader Joe's customers expect safe foods, not secret genetic experiments hidden in its products," said Heather Whitehead of Greenpeace.
Pat St. John of Trader Joe's said, "Indeed the corn bread mix does have genetically modified corn. However, it has been approved by the FDA for human consumption."
The California-based chain has 131 stores in 13 states, with 26 stores in Northern California.<
