Hockey fans who happen to be federal employees affected by the ongoing government shutdown can get into the 2019 NHL Fan Fair this week in San Jose ahead of the annual All-Star Game.
The employees can also ride Caltrain and SamTrans for free, according to both transit agencies. To get a free ride, workers must show their federal government employee identification cards to bus operators on SamTrans and to conductors on Caltrain. Free service will remain available for the duration of the government shutdown.
The four-day fan festival starts Thursday at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, featuring autograph sessions with current and former hockey stars, interactive activities, a Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit, and a tournament involving NHL mascots.
NHL officials said 2,000 complimentary admission tickets will be available each day to federal employees, who can show their valid government ID at the convention center box office to receive up to four of the free tickets.
The Fan Fair runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, then 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The 2019 Honda NHL All-Star Game takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday at the SAP Center.
