The U.S. Coast Guard announced today that it has awarded a $3.5 million contract to a Florida company to remove oil from a sunken ship that has been linked to the deaths of more than 1,500 birds.
Titan Maritime, of Dania, Fla., is scheduled to begin work later this month. The company will conduct an underwater search of the SS Jacob Luckenbach, which sank in 1953 near the Golden Gate Bridge, and determine how much oil is trapped inside its hull before the recovery.
