The College of San Mateo will host a Family Science Day this Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1-11 p.m.
The Family Science and Astronomy Festival will include activities and workshops with biology, chemistry, geometry, math and physics stations. These stations will have hands-on demonstrations hosted by the CSM instructors and staff.
This event has been held since 2006, Mohsen Janatpour, the founder and a member of the CSM physics faculty said. He initially began the event when his children were very young as a way to get children excited in the sciences.
The event tends to draw large crowds as well.
“Depending on the events that are happening around the Bay Area, anywhere from around 700 to 2,000 attend,” Janatpour said.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Brian Day, a staff scientist at NASA’s Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute. Day notably flew on NASA’s Aurigid MAC mission in 2007, where he examined fragments of a comet.
“He’s in charge of Artemis Project is basically trying to build a station on the moon and send people to Mars,” Janatpour added.
There is no need to sign up before attending workshops, the college said.
The event is at the Science Building 36, Library Building 9, and Theatre Building 3.
