A memorial to “fallen heroes” — meaning those who died in the line of duty — may someday grace Central Park in San Mateo, a city already known for honoring veterans, especially those from the divisive war in Vietnam.

The planned memorial will feature the names of those San Mateo residents who made the supreme sacrifice. This means, of course, members of the armed forces. The monument, however, will also list the names of emergency responders, such as police officers and firefighters.
