With its recent lawsuit targeting 261 Internet users, the music recording industry has hit an all-time low. The users, like San Mateo resident Charles Dumond, mostly had no idea that they were being targeted or even why.
It is further evidence of the desperate measures the recording industry will take to feed its greed. When technological advances allowed music fans to record tapes off other tapes, record labels tried to fight it. When compact disc burners were invented, the record labels tried to fight it. With the advent of the Internet, music file sharing emerged and record labels tried to fight it.
Recent victories include the dissolution of Napster. The industry has had less success with Kazaa, Morpheus and Grokster. Yesterday's news comes as a new approach of shifting the target from companies to the user.
Now that its business has become outdated and it has been unable to keep up with technology, the recording industry is lashing out at the little guy.
The average CD costs $18, a tremendous markup from its actual production cost of less than a $1. By charging the amount it does, the industry is encouraging music lovers to find alternative ways to obtain music
