A taxi driver believed to be responsible for a hit-and-run incident in Millbrae that left a 38-year-old woman in critical condition was charged Monday with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor attempting to destroy evidence after he was found by Burlingame police at a gas station car wash Friday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The car Daly City resident Teodoro Garcia, 55, was driving Friday when he stopped at a car wash after the early-morning incident was visibly damaged in the front and had a strand of hair on it, according to prosecutors.
At approximately 4:53 a.m., Garcia allegedly struck a woman who was using a crosswalk near the intersection of El Camino Real and Silva Avenue while she had a red light. A witness saw Garcia pull over to the side of the road, get out of his car to look at her and then get back into his car before driving south away from the incident, according to prosecutors.
The victim was taken to the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center in critical condition, and is believed to have suffered a traumatic brain injury along with several bone fractures, according to prosecutors.
Garcia faces four years, six months in state prison and pleaded not guilty to his charges Monday when he appeared in court. He is custody on $50,000 bail and will next appear in court April 26 for preliminary hearing, according to prosecutors.
