For more than 130 years, the land near Crystal Springs Reservoir has been closed to the public. But starting today, people will be allowed to tour part of the pristine 23,000 acres of untouched land.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is opening the land to the public after years of pressure from trail enthusiasts. Officials from San Francisco and San Mateo counties will be on hand today for the unveiling of a four-mile stretch of Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail. The remaining six miles will open to the public later this year.
The trail is located on the west side of Crystal Springs Reservoir and makes a mostly straight line from State Route 92 to Sneath Lane Gate in San Bruno. The 10-mile trail is now part of the 400-mile Bay Ridge Trail that circles the Bay Area's hill and mountain tops.
People will be able to take a guided tour of the trail in groups of 20 or less and must make reservations. The reservations can be made via phone or Internet.
