Hearing delayed for accused boyfriend killer
The Menlo Park woman who fatally stabbed her boyfriend and tried killing herself after he reportedly danced with another woman must wait another month to learn if she'll stand trial for murder.
Blanca Estella Rivas, 23, has pleaded not guilty to killing Jose Arita, 21, on Aug. 8. She was expected to have a preliminary hearing of the evidence yesterday but Judge Carl Holm ordered her back Jan. 18 after a Spanish interpreter could not be found.
Rivas' case has continually been delayed since her arrest for Arita's death, primarily since she herself spent two weeks recovering from a self-inflicted knife wound to the throat.
The couple allegedly argued after Arita danced in their Menlo Park backyard with another woman. The fight escalated and became physical as they entered the Hamilton Avenue home about 6:30 p.m. At some point, Rivas reportedly plunged a steak knife into Rivas' chest. After it broke off, she grabbed another knife and stabbed herself in the throat. Responding officers found Arita dead and Rivas with the knife still in her throat. The couple lived together in a room at the house.
Rivas remains in custody on no-bail status.
