Grad Night is a San Mateo High School tradition, held immediately after graduation ceremony on May 27. For the students, it is a time to share memories and celebrate with their classmates one last time. For the parents, the goal is to create a fun, safe, alcohol and drug free graduation party.
San Mateo High School parents are holding a Green eWaste collection event fundraiser to cover the event costs. Their goal is to collect 550 used CRT devices (monitors and televisions) and 300 computers, plus other electronic items that help to meet their goal. San Mateo High School does not subsidize this event, which is expected to cost $65 to $85 per student. Students purchase tickets which offsets some costs and the fundraiser will cover the difference.
Businesses, families and individuals are encouraged to bring their used electronic items (working or not, any size) to either of the collection locations. If there are large items, or a large quantity, we can arrange pick up at your location. Call or e-mail to make arrangements.
The collected items will be refined by ECS of Santa Clara and the event is being coordinated by Green World Fundraisers in Morgan Hill.
There are two collection sites on Sunday, Jan. 24: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at San Mateo High School, 506 N. Delaware St. in San Mateo and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Foster City Recreation Center, 650 Shell Blvd., Foster City .

With April 1 just around the corner, Census 2010 is rapidly approaching. To help raise awareness of the 2010 Census, the San Mateo County Manager’s Office is promoting the countywide Be Counted Poster Contest within our schools. Students of all grade levels (K-12) and in all schools throughout the county can participate. A Selection Committee will choose the winners within all five districts.
They are asking local businesses to support our talented young artists and also help with Census outreach by donating prizes for the 45 winners. They would appreciate gift certificates of $5 to $25 from local businesses. Printed materials (in both English and Spanish) will be mailed to each individual student about the poster contest. All sponsors will be recognized on these materials. For more information contact Census Coordinator Margot Grant at mgrant@co.sanmateo.ca.us or 363-1947.
