The Redwood City Elementary School District is having a district-wide instrumental music concert May 31 at Sequoia High School. Redwood City voters' failure to pass Measure V means the music programs and its four instrumental music teachers will be cut unless it can raise about $300,000. Organizers are expecting an emotional atmosphere and performance. Kindergarten to 5th grade students will perform at 6 p.m., and Kindergarten to 8th grade students will play at 8 p.m. at Carrington Hall. For more information call Redwood City Education Foundation Secretary Laura Rhodes at 365-3203.

Serra High School's varsity baseball team dedicated a pitching bullpen to alumni dad Al Malley. Since the early 1970s Al and his wife, Joan, regularly watched baseball games and other sports at Serra. Malley's sons Jim and Dan played baseball at Serra, and Dan was a member of the 1984 WCAL and CCS championship team. Malley retired from Foods Inc. and Petrini Foods and dedicated volunteer time to Serra, helping keep the field in shape four days a week during baseball season. "I never expected recognition for this, especially for something that I enjoyed so much," Malley said in a statement. His son Jim said in a statement, "My father loves sports and he loves Serra, so this just seemed like a natural place for him to spend a lot of time in his retirement years."

The College of San Mateo placed 15th of 158 colleges the annual Math League Competition of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. Students took math tests in the fall and spring, and the school's top five scorers formed a team. CSM has been in the nation's top 20 since it began competing in 2003. CSM student Jacky Tse finished tied for ninth in the country. "It's been a great way to get a bunch of students together to do some good math outside the classroom," said CSM math professor Bob Hasson in a statement. "Students had a chance to work together and have fun in the practice workshops. We are pleased with both the amount of student interest and with our good national showing."
