Heather Elementary School in San Carlos shared with students a beautiful Persian dance performance featuring Shadan Mirabedi, Tina Saadi and Miriam Peretz and the traditional drum instrument called “daf” April 17. Children were invited to participate and moved their arms in flowing motions while twirling. The school also celebrated spring this week by making paper flower collage spring cards featuring kids names written in Persian.
Robotics teams from Aragon, Mills and Menlo-Atherton High Schools showcased their robots for the Silicon Valley Ice Skating Association’s Robots on Ice fundraising event, raising awareness about saving Bay Area ice rinks.

The San Mateo Garden Center is hosting their annual Plant Sale & Craft Fair at the San Mateo Garden Center 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5. Musicians from Carlmont High School will perform from 10 a.m. to noon, Hillsdale High School from noon to 1:45 p.m. and San Mateo High School from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Hans Barber

Rachel Ma
Rachel Ma, a senior at Aragon High School, won 2024 Coke Scholar of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, an extremely competitive award for exemplifying strong leadership, service and academics. Ma volunteers at local schools and leads workshops for underrepresented groups in STEM such as girls and students with disabilities. She has built an app that serves thousands of individuals across 27 countries and sent an experiment to space with her winning NASA TechRise Challenge team. Ma is one of 150 students in the nation to receive this award and will receive a $20,000 scholarship.
