The San Mateo County Office of Education received a $113,797 grant to help thousands of displaced children throughout the state. The grant is part of the $15.5 million in Foster Youth Services County grants distributed this week.

The San Mateo-Foster City School District will hold the ninth annual magnet school information fair in the Performing Arts Center at Bayside Middle School, 2025 Kehoe Ave., San Mateo on Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The night is designed to provide parents with an in-depth look at the eight magnet schools and programs within the district for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007.

Redwood City Elementary, San Mateo Union High, Sequoia Union school districts and Stanford Schools Corporation were all named as recipients of a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Incentive Award. A total of $5.4 million was handed out to teacher around the state to educators teaching in low-performing schools. Redwood City and San Mateo earned $10,000 each. Stanford raked in $25,000. Sequoia scored $40,000.

A number of students in the county qualified as Commended Students in the 52nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation are honored this year for their exceptional academic promise.

The Peninsula Community Foundation awarded more than $375,000 in college scholarships this year. Through the foundation’s 19 scholarship programs more than 100 students received scholarships this year. Among those recipients were Aragon High graduate Sylvia Leung, who is attending the University of California at Berkeley and received a $5,000 scholarship and Lost Altos High School graduate Huan Zhou, who received $8,000 from two scholarships and is attending Harvard University.
