The latest lawsuit filed by opponents of the city's downtown theater project was postponed Wednesday for several weeks as a new judge familiarizes himself with the case.
The most recent case, in what has been a year of legal battles brought by a group of downtown merchants and nearby residents, charges that the city illegally closed a public street for a project that isn't in the public's benefit. The new date in San Mateo County Superior Court is set for Aug. 20.
The Committee for Responsible Cinema's prior cases have been handled by Judge John Runde. But this case was sent late Tuesday from Runde's desk to that of Judge John Schwartz, who had little time to prepare for yesterday's hearing.
