The next two weeks will require a lot of sorting, as demolition crews sort the rubble from inside Bay Meadows for recycling.
The 74-year-old building officially closed last month and will be replaced with housing, retail and office space. Before any of that can be developed, the building must be carefully deconstructed.
The recycling effort will take place at the same time crews are removing paint layer by layer from the exterior of the building. The paint must be carefully removed and contained because it likely contains lead and/or asbestos, said Bay Meadows Land Company spokesman Adam Alberti.
In approximately two weeks, the crews will begin to knock down the outer shell of the building, Alberti said.
The complete demolition should be complete in November, making way for construction crews to grade for new roads and utility instillation.
Bay Meadows Land Company expects to begin construction of parks in April 2010. The entire project should be complete by December 2012, according to the company.
Bay Meadows will include a 15-acre public park network— 12 acres of which will be donated to the city as a community park. The new neighborhood will feature 1,171 homes and 750,000 square feet of office space along the Caltrain rail line. Additionally, there will be 93,000 square feet of surrounding shops and restaurants for what is being referred to as the "Town Square” core.
