After months of planning and public workshops, Redwood City officials are ready to render a verdict on a design for the new courthouse square downtown.
The City Council, Planning Commission and Architectural Review Committee will meet jointly Monday night to look at several proposed ideas and pick one to move forward on. Although the groups have the final say, the public is invited to offer any final advice or direction.
The decision is the culmination of three public workshops and many discussions trying to figure out the best place for people to gather on Broadway. The square will replace the annex building currently adjoining the old courthouse as part of the plan to restore the building's facade.
The open air plaza space is 200 feet although the entire opening between the courthouse and the street is 442 feet. At public workshops held since fall some expressed concern about shade and wind.
The chosen design will be refined and unveiled at a future workshop before going to the City Council for final approval.
The plaza, to be situated between the courthouse and the Fox Theater on Broadway, will open simultaneously with the new 20-screen cinema in August 2005. The new theater is bounded by Broadway, Jefferson Avenue and Middlefield Road.
The City Council voted Sept. 8 to allocate $7 million in redevelopment funds toward the project, with $1.5 million specifically earmarked to build the plaza.
