Dry and warmer-than-normal conditions across the Bay Area are expected to give way to several days of rain and possible thunderstorms later this week, the National Weather Service said.
In a statement on Tuesday, forecasters said above-normal temperatures and dry weather will continue through Wednesday before unsettled conditions return Thursday, bringing below-normal temperatures and beneficial rainfall across the region.
Rain is expected to begin Thursday and continue into the weekend, with showery conditions Thursday and Friday becoming more widespread Saturday and Sunday. The system is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall that could create ponding on roads and slick travel conditions in parts of the Bay Area and Central Coast.
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible Thursday and Friday across the North Bay, San Francisco, the Peninsula, East Bay, South Bay, Santa Cruz County and Monterey and San Benito counties. Storms could produce lightning, locally heavy rainfall, small hail and erratic gusty winds, forecasters said.
Rainfall totals are expected to vary across the region, with lighter amounts in valleys and higher totals possible in coastal ranges and interior hills through the weekend, according to the weather service.
