What's in Season

 

Carrots are believed to have originated in Afghanistan, where they were purple. After spreading to China, the Middle East and eventually Northern Europe, yellow and purple carrots were used primarily for their aromatic green tops. It wasn’t until the 17th century when the Dutch cultivated large, orange roots that carrots began to resemble the common Imperator variety of today’s markets. At the farmers’ market, ask your farmer if they grow other varieties as well: small, globe-shaped Planet and Thumbelina varieties, cone-shaped Chantenay, or short, cylindrical Nantes. Carrots not only add a sweet flavor to soups and sauces, but they also have been reported to protect against cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer – including cancer of the breast, bladder, cervix, prostate, colon, lung, larynx and esophagus. Just two carrots provide four times the Recommended Daily Allowance of Vitamin A, in addition to vitamins K, C, and B6, fiber, potassium and thiamin. That’s why carrots top the list of What’s in Season this week at the San Mateo Farmers’ Market.
