San Mateo residents are invited to the City’s Compost Awareness Event on Saturday May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Phoenix Garden, 326 Paul Scannell Drive, San Mateo.
In celebration of International Compost Awareness Week, the City of San Mateo invites residents to dig into sustainability at a free Compost Awareness & Giveaway Event on Sat. May 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Phoenix Garden (222 Paul Scannell Drive, San Mateo). Attendees can collect free compost, seeds, and seedlings while supplies last, and gain insights into sustainable gardening practices from UC Master Gardeners. The event will feature:
• Free compost—residents may load all they like—bring your own container or bucket! Shovels provided on loan!
• Free seedlings and seeds from the San Mateo Public Library and Beresford Community Garden
• Vermicomposting and backyard composting demos from UC Berkeley and other experts
•Environmental presentations from Master Gardeners

• Financial incentives for County of San Mateo residents to start composting at home (backyard or worm bins)
• Tours of Phoenix Garden, including the Lavender Labyrinth.
The giveaway is first come, first served, and all materials are available while supplies last. Guests are encouraged to bring their own containers for compost, and reusable bags or boxes for plants and seeds. Learn more at cityofsanmateo.org/compost.
