FOSTER CITY — Gilead Sciences Inc. on Tuesday reported a fourth-quarter loss of $3.87 billion, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.
The Foster City-based company said it had a loss of $2.96 per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to $1.78 per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.70 per share.
The HIV and hepatitis C drugmaker posted revenue of $5.95 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $5.78 billion.
Gilead expects full-year earnings in the range of $1.41 to $1.51 per share.
Gilead shares have risen 12 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has climbed almost 1 percent. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $80.38, a rise of 11 percent in the last 12 months.
