In win for 'One Battle After Another,' the Oscars meet an anxious moment
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A horde of children chased Conan O’Brien onto the Dolby Theatre stage in the opening moments of the 98th Academy Awards, and throughout an Oscar ceremony that saw “One Battle After Another” win best picture, it was like they never left. A queasy future, both immediate and for generations to come, pervaded over an Academy Award shadowed by war, political turmoil and whatever might happen to the movies in an A.I.-supercharged tomorrow. These were the high anxiety Oscars. At almost every moment, they seemed to be trying to rally a little optimism despite omnipresent storm clouds.
Behind the scenes at the Oscars: What you didn’t see on camera
LOS ANGELES (AP) — There’s the Oscars you see on television and the one that takes place off camera. During commercial breaks, it can be a race to catch up with, congratulate and possibly console the peers around you. It can also be a time to run to the famed lobby bar and really be out of sight. Among the off-camera moments The Associated Press saw at the 98th Academy Awards: Kate Hudson joining Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell at the bar, supporting actor nominee Jacob Elordi taking his mom, arm in arm, to a bar, and Emma Stone losing a diamond ring in her dress. After an assist from another guest, the dress and ring were saved.
Burgers, cocktails, sparkly new duds: Oscar winners, losers and guests hit the after-parties
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Once the Oscar telecast ends, the partying starts. After the Governors Ball, some Oscar attendees headed to the more exclusive Vanity Fair party at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Organizers say attendees were greeted by 10,000 yellow orchids, according to organizers. The menu ranged from Mediterranean sea bass and grilled ribeye to Domino’s pizza and In-N-Out burgers. On his way in, host Conan O'Brien said it was a challenge to keep Oscar jokes fresh and topical. Jane Fonda spoke passionately about the First Amendment. Oscar-winning sound editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle spoke about a victory with especially deep meaning.
Key Oscar moments: Paul Thomas Anderson and Amy Madigan wins, outstanding songs and sad goodbyes
Paul Thomas Anderson won big at the Oscars with “One Battle After Another” but “Sinners” also landed major wins. But in the shadow of those big movies, actor Amy Madigan ended a 40-year wait between nomination and winning for “Weapons,” and the show honored Rob Reiner and Robert Redford in a long in memoriam section. Anderson, one of the most respected filmmakers of his generation, finally won an Oscar. Then he won another. Then he won the biggest one. There were also two stunning musical performances — “I Lied to You” from “Sinners” and “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters.”
Kennedy Center votes to shut down operations for 2 years and names a new president
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Kennedy Center’s board of directors has voted to shut down operations for two years following this summer’s July 4 celebrations. The widely expected decision comes in the wake of numerous resignations and cancellations during President Donald Trump’s second term, although Trump himself has cited the need for repairs as a reason for the closure. The board also voted on Monday to install Matt Floca as CEO and executive director. He replaces Trump ally Richard Grenell, who oversaw far-reaching changes at the venue that prompted an outcry from many artists and exacerbated the operation’s financial challenges.

At this year's 98th Academy Awards, stars played with feathers and color for their looks of the night. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Autumn Durald Arkapaw has made Oscars history by winning best cinematography for “Sinners,” becoming the first woman to take the prize.
