San Jose State, A's talking
about football, soccer stadium
A spokeswoman for San Jose State University confirmed Friday afternoon university officials have had discussions with Oakland A's owner Lew Wolff about building a new stadium that would be shared by the school's football team and a Major League Soccer team.
SJSU spokeswoman Pat Lopes Harris said university officials last met with Wolff in December and the meetings have been "constructive."
"The university has had around four meetings with Lew's team," Lopes Harris said.
Wolff and partner John Fisher own a three-year option to return Major League Soccer to the Bay Area. The region has been without a team since the San Jose Earthquakes moved to Houston, and renamed themselves the Dynamo, in December 2005.
SJSU would contribute the land the new stadium would sit on as part of the deal, according to Lopes Harris.
Wolff is apparently on a bit of a stadium binge. In November he announced plans to build a new stadium for the A's in Fremont. A spokesman for Wolff was not immediately available for comment on the SJSU project.
Phelps begins quest for Spitz's record
LONG BEACH -- Michael Phelps launches his two-month countdown to the world championships this weekend, with the landmark meet in Australia representing the start of what he calls "the biggest two years of my swimming career."

The world championships are the most important meet outside the Olympics, allowing Phelps and his rivals to size each other up 1 1/2 years before the Beijing Games.
Phelps has hopes of again chasing Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals in Beijing. He fell just short in 2004, earning six golds and two silvers in Athens.
But a second attempt hinges on how Phelps performs in Melbourne, where he may swim five individual events and the relays.
Phelps believes Beijing represents his final shot at matching Spitz because he'll be 23 at those games.
"After this Olympics, I think I'd be too old," he said. "I don't think my body could handle it."
Former heavyweight champ
Mike Tyson indicted on drug charges
PHOENIX -- Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson has been indicted on charges of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs.
The 40-year-old was indicted Friday on felony drug possession and paraphernalia possession counts and two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of drugs. If convicted of all four charges, he could be sentenced to up to 7 1/2 years in prison, Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said.
The charges stem from Tyson's Dec. 29 arrest in Scottsdale. Tyson was pulled over after leaving a nightclub, and an officer found bags of cocaine in his back pocket and another in a package of cigarettes in his car, according to court records.
