The South City Warriors entered Friday’s non-league football showdown with Sequoia having lost four straight, the program’s longest losing streak since dropping a program-record 26 in a row from 2018-22. The current streak, spanning through three losses to open 2025, began in the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs last season with a semifinal loss to the same Sequoia Ravens.
The Warriors (1-3) snapped their losing streak and got payback against Ravens, riding two late touchdowns from senior Devon Jackson to claim a 14-9 non-league victory at Clifford Field. Jackson’s final score was a 2-yard gallop off the left side with 1:16 to play to give the Warriors their first lead of the night.
South City was held scoreless until midway through the fourth quarter. The Ravens (2-2) got on the board in the third quarter with a 32-yard field goal from junior Christopher Verdusco, and added a 12-yard touchdown run from junior Luke Ostrander to go up 9-0 in the fourth.
Then the Warriors went to work. Jackson got his team on the board with a 5-yard scoring run with 7:05 to play. After Sequoia was forced to punt, South City senior quarterback Anthony Howell — who misfired for three interceptions in the game — proved a dual threat as he gained 165 total yards in the contest, and preserved the Warriors’ game-winning drive with an array of big gainers.
On third-and-9 from the Warriors’ 37, Howell scrambled 15 yards across midfield for a first down. A personal foul penalty marched South City back to its own 36, but Howell connected for a 23-yard pass to bring up third-and-1. Then Howell bootlegged to pick up the first, and two plays later he ran it for an 18-yard pickup inside the red zone. Jackson followed with a 16-yard run up the middle to set up his game-winning score.
Jackson finished with 15 carries for 62 yards and two TDs.
