Junior left-hander Kyle Sweeney struck out a career-high 12 through six shutout innings, and right-hander Lucca Larson used seven pitches to work a perfect seventh as Sacred Heart Prep (5-1 PAL Ocean, 11-4 overall) became the first PAL Ocean Division baseball team to reach five league wins with a 7-0 victory Thursday at Mills (0-4, 3-8).
It had been nearly two weeks since Sweeney’s last outing, when he allowed his first two runs of the year in a 6-5 win over South City. The southpaw has won five straight appearances to improve to 5-0 with a 0.58 ERA in six games on the year.
The Gators rallied for four runs in the third. An RBI single by Collin Beim made it 3-0. After a single from sophomore Dane Bochnowski moved Beim to third, Beim swiped home on a double steal to cap the rally. In the fifth, Beim singled to right to drive home two more runs. Bochnowski added a sacrifice fly. Beim was 2 for 4 with three RBIs on the day, senior Nico Pollioni added two hits with a double and an RBI, and Bochnowski had two hits with an RBI.
The win caps a two-game sweep for SHP, outscoring Mills 11-0 in the series.
