With Serra junior Drew Dowd committing to Stanford in the offseason, he looked right at home pitching across the street from Sunken Diamond.
The southpaw soldiered through six innings and Serra rewarded him with a three-run sixth, as the Padres (1-1) rallied for their first win of the year 3-1 Saturday at Palo Alto (0-1).
“He was good,” Serra manager Chris Houle said. “It probably wasn’t his sharpest performance but it was his first performance this year. So he was pretty efficient.”
Dowd allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine in his season debut. Paly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third but, once Vikings starter Josh Kasevich departed after five shutout innings, Serra got the bats going against the bullpen in the sixth.
Serra junior Michael Sarhatt led off the inning with a single. After pinch-runner Kannon Clayton stole second, junior Logan Azem shot an RBI single through the right side of the diamond to tie it 1-1. After a walk to Matt Fung, senior Marek Palladino gave the Padres the lead with a two-run double into the left-field corner.
Dowd marched back out for the bottom of the sixth and got into trouble, loading the bases on a two-on, two-out single by cleanup hitter Kyle Mostofizadeh. Pitching coach Dan Nolan then held a conference at the mound, but was committed to letting Dowd face at least one more batter.
“We figured we knew where his pitch count was, we were going to stick with him at least the last hitter,” Houle said. “And he was able to get out of it.”
Dowd finished the day against the next batter with a called third strike to escape the jam. Senior right-hander Timmy Ghiorso worked a hitless seventh, walking one and striking out two, to earn the save.
