CSM names Riley Goulding new baseball skipper

Goulding is a 2009 graduate of Merrill West High School in Tracy, where he was a three-year varsity player. He played for CSM and Williams as an infielder in 2010 and 2011, helping the Bulldogs to a ninth straight Coast Conference Golden Gate Division championship and a berth in the state final four in 2010. In his two years playing at CSM, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 52-17. He played with the likes of Serra’s Justin Maffei and pitcher Danny Chavez, along with former Carlmont standout Devin Bradley and Aragon’s Nick Franquez, both pitchers as well.

Goulding transfered to University of Texas-Pan American, earning a degree in business management before getting his masters degree from Concordia University-Irvine in coaching and athletic administration.

After his playing days, Goulding spent 2015 to 2019 as a graduate assistant and eventually the Matadors’ hitting coach. He then moved on to St. Mary’s in Moraga for two seasons, 2019 and 2020, before joining the CSM coaching staff prior to the 2021 season.

Goulding is the son of John Goulding, a 1971 graduate of Aragon High School and 17-year head coach for the San Mateo American Legion Post 82 summer team. He took over the baseball program at James Logan High School in 1992 and when he stepped down in 2015, had won more than 500 games.

Riley Goulding comes from a family of coaches. In addition to his father, brother Tyler Goulding is the men’s golf coach at Air Force Academy, while his other brother Logan Goulding is head golf coach at University of Denver.

Williams, a 1983 Carlmont graduate, played two years at CSM before transferring to UC Santa Barbara for the 1987 and 1988 season. He returned to CSM as a member of the coaching staff under his mentor, John Noce, before being named manager ahead of the 1995 season. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, Williams transferred 97% of his players to four-year schools.
