After spending two days trying to qualify for the final four days of the tournament, the remaining 64 players in the USGA Junior Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan had to suddenly shift gears from playing against the course with two rounds of stroke play, to now going to head to head with another golfer at the start of six rounds over four days.
Now, the goal is to have a better score on a hole than the opponent and then win enough holes to advance.
Which is what Edan Cui did. The rising senior at Crystal and a 2023 quarterfinalist, Cui received the No. 21 seed for the second year in a row and escaped with a 1-up victory over France’s Oscar Couilleau, who was seeded No. 44. With the win, Cui advances to the final 32 Thursday and will face South Korea’s Seonghyeon An, the No. 12 seed. An beat 53rd-seed Luke Moseley, 4-and-2.
Cui wasted little time in putting the pressure on Couilleau. He won two of the first four holes, with a birdie at No. 1 and par on No. 4, and increased his lead to 4-up with a par at No. 6 and birdie at No. 7.
The pair then alternated the next four holes, with Couilleau finally getting on the board with wins at No. 8 and No. 10, but Cui answered by winning holes Nos. 7 and 9.
Couilleau would cut Cui’s lead to 2-up with a birdie on the par-4 13th, but Collieau ran out of holes, despite another birdie on 18.
The rounds of 32 and 16 will be played Thursday, with quarterfinals and semifinals scheduled for Friday. That championship match is Saturday.

is down to the final 16
The first round of match play of the Women’s California Amateur Championship was held at Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo Wednesday morning and most of the big hitters advanced to the final 16.
The top four seeds — No. 1 Jasmine Leovao (Oceanside), No. 2 Anna Song (Los Angeles), defending champ and No. 3 seed Katie Villegas (Arcadia) and No. 4 Leigh Chien (Irvine) — all advanced.
Leovao won her match 2-up and will take on Newark’s Adora Lee, the No. 17 seed. Lee won her match 2-and-1. Song won 1-up and will face No. 15-seed Natalie Vo of San Jose, who won 1-up.
Villegas needed an extra hole, playing 19 to get past No. 30 Madelyn Gamble of Pleasant Hill, 1-up. She’ll face No. 14 Emily Song of Irvine, who won her match 1-up.
Chien dominated her opponent, winning 6-and-5 and will take on Ashley Yun of West Covina. Yun was equally as strong, winning her match 6-and-4.
The biggest upset of the day came when San Ramon’s Lily Peng, the No. 26 seed, knocked off rising star Asterisk Talley of Chowchilla, 3-and-2.
The round of 16 will be played Thursday, with the quarterfinals and semifinals scheduled for Friday. The championship is scheduled for Saturday.
