Multiple fielding errors and bases loaded with stranded runners at the end of three consecutive innings proved to be too much for Carlmont's baseball team yesterday as they lost to Terra Nova 7-5.
The Scots (3-2 Bay Division, 10-3 overall) got off to a horrible start in the top of the first, giving up four consecutive runs which were intermixed with two costly errors.
Carlmont pitcher Chris Davidson had a rough day as well, leaving the game after five innings. Besides surrendering seven runs and six hits, including a two-run home run in the third, he was struck by a line drive on his gloved hand.
After a fielder's choice got Terra Nova's Brandon Canas on base in the first, Adrien Malone followed and reached on an error to put runners at first and second. With Trevor Jodsaas at bat, a 0-2 shot sent to shortstop was again booted, scoring Canas and Malone.
Mike Humphrey and Manual Bendana also contributed runs to their team off of a fielder's choice and single, respectively, making the score 4-0.
Carlmont came back in the bottom of the inning to cut Terra Nova's lead in half. With two runners on, second baseman Nick San Filippo blasted a triple which cleared the bases.
Matt Van Orden put the Scots on top in the next inning. After Matt Denys got on base via a ground rule double and Matt Bou reached because on a Terra Nova error, Van Orden lined a 1-2 Jodsaas pitch over the left-field berm for a three-run homer to give the Scots a 5-4 lead.

Terra Nova, not about to let Van Orden's shot set the pace of the game, came up with a two-run blast of their own in the third. With one runner on and two out, Nick Myers connected to send the ball in the same vicinity as Van Orden's.
The third, fourth and fifth innings would present multiple scoring opportunities for Carlmont, but unfortunately ended with the same result - the side being retired with the bases loaded. In two of the three times, a Scots player went down swinging.
Carlmont head coach Norm Hayes was less then pleased with his team's performance.
"We made a lot of errors," said Hayes. "We can't win making this many errors."
"(Terra Nova relief pitcher Nick) Regnart also kept us off balance," said Hayes. Regnart came in to replace Jodsaas in the fifth. "We didn't know he would have that much spin on the ball."
"There is no reasonable explanation why we had so many errors," added Hayes.
