Hillsborough’s Caleb Jacobsohn turned in 4 1/3 innings on the mound, totaling 67 pitches. But it was the one throw he made from the hot corner that saved the day in Wednesday’s 7-5 win over Redwood City in the elimination bracket of the District 52 Little League All-Stars 10s tournament.

With the potential tying runs at second and third in the bottom of the sixth, Redwood City’s Hunter Karcich hit a rocket to the left side of the infield. But Jacobsohn, who made the move to third base at the start of the inning, made a step and a dive to his left to come up with the ball. But that was only half the play.
The speedy Karcich was flying down the line as Jacobsohn corralled the ball and put all the mustard he could on the throw. It turned out to be just enough, as the game ended on a bang-bang out call at first.
“I think that’s the shortstop’s, but I was like: ‘I want to get that,’” Jacobsohn said. “I just really wanted to get that, and I just threw it as hard as I could. I thought he was going to be safe, but barely got him.”
It was a disappointing elimination loss for Redwood City, after going into the final inning trailing 7-3. But back-to-back walks from Ryan Scott and Graham Harmon set the stage for a two-run single off the bat of Louis Kneeland. Matthew Chye followed with a two-out walk, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.
“We battled back at the end, and we did have who we wanted at the plate,” Redwood City manager Ryan Karcich said. “Got a little out in front of the ball, but still we gave it a fighting chance, and that’s all you can ask for from 10-year-olds.”
Redwood City jumped out to an early lead with single runs in the first and second. But Hillsborough tied in in the third on an RBI double from Jacobsohn. Four batters later, Brady Tognetti worked a bases-loaded walk to force home Jacobsohn with the go-ahead run.

Hillsborough scored a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth, but it seemed like it should have been much more as they had the bases loaded time and again.
“The offense was OK because we had several times bases loaded with one out, and we would only score like one or two runs,” Jacobsohn said. “And I thought we could have definitely scored at least three.”
Jacobsohn was nails on the mound, though, allowing three runs on just one hit and two walks, while striking out four.
“He’s got a great arm and he’s got three pitches, and he was throwing strikes,” Hillsborough manager Tim Perotti said. “I think that’s key.”
Jacobsohn’s throw to first on his game-ending defensive gem turned out to be the biggest strike of the night.
“That was a great play on the dive,” Perotti said. “He’s got the strongest arm on the team, and he barely got the guy.”
Miller Collins went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI to pace Hillsborough. Kneeland had a single and two RBIs for Redwood City, while Hunter Karcich and a triple in the first.
