The College of San Mateo track and field team qualified eight athletes - five men, three women - for the California Community College State Meet this weekend at American River College in Sacramento.
The CSM men finished seventh as a team at the Northern California championships with 54 points. The Lady Bulldogs were 11th with 28.5 points. The scoring represented the most points for the CSM program in the Nor Cal championships since 1989.
Qualifying for the state meet on the men's side were Brian Wilhelm, a freshman out of St. Ignatius in San Francisco. He qualified in both the discus and shot put. In the Nor Cal finals, he was second in the discus with a throw of 150 feet, 7 inches and was third in the shot with a distance of 50-6. Wilhelm has the fourth-best discus mark in the state and the sixth-best in the shot. Teammate Ray Hisatake, a freshman from Westmoor, also qualified in the discus, with a fifth-place finish in the Nor Cal meet.
The Bulldogs sent three decathletes to the state meet after a second, third and fourth finish at the Nor Cal championships. Shawn Magzhi, a sophomore out of Burlingame, is the third-ranked decathlete in the state, while freshman Matt O'Connor (Serra) is fourth and sophomore Jeremy Vukasinovic (Terra Nova) is fifth in the state.
O'Connor also qualified for the long jump, finishing second in the Nor Cal meet with a jump of 23-3 1/4.
On the women's side, Kelly Schumacher, a freshman out of Terra Nova, qualified in the hammer throw and discus. Her mark of 139-4 was good for third in the Nor Cal championships, while she finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 114-7. Freshman Francesca Streb also qualified in the hammer after a sixth-place finish at the Nor Cal meet.
Samantha Belvini, a sophomore out of Notre Dame-Belmont, was third in the heptathalon and fifth in the long jump at the Nor Cal meet.
